What better way to connect our Challenge Walk MS family than to highlight our Challenge Walk MS veterans! Kathy Mackintosh and Claire Gordy are a veteran Challenge Walkers from the Raleigh/Durham area in NC.
In 2006, both were preparing for their first Challenge Walk MS in September. They met by looking on message boards for someone to train with all summer. They became fast friends while walking over 2500 miles together since then. Both had been diagnosed with RRMS , Kathy at age 50 and Claire at age 18. They had a lot to talk about! Since then, they have merged teams, shared the captain’s hat, and kept Claire’s Team name from all of her previous teams.
An 8-time Challenge Walker, Kathy currently serves in many capacities for the Greater Carolinas chapter, including on the Speaker’s Bureau, as a research advocate and on the Women with MS conference. She studied Integrative Health coaching at Duke. Claire, a 6-time Challenge Walker, serves also as a Research Advocate and on the Modern Society committee. (In addition to Challenge Walk MS, Claire also has been a MuckRuckus and Bike MS participant!) Claire received her Doctorate in Immunology from Duke in 2011.
In addition to Kathy and Claire, the team “A Heartbreaking Team of Staggering Genius,” can boast of two other dedicated volunteers for the National MS Society: Carlos Goller and Barbara Patterson. This team was one of our top 10 fundraising teams in 2012 – way to go!!
Kathy has spent time at all MS events, and says that “ for me , the Challenge Walk comes the closest to defining the mission of the MS society, to Stop MS from keeping me from moving. It is very inspiring to walk with and meet everyone each year, hear their stories, and be re-energized~~yes, from walking 50 miles!~~ for another year of Fighting MS.”
